African wild cats are becoming increasingly rare outside of protected areas.  This is more down to the fact that there are so many feral domestic cats with which they will breed readily.  The best ways to tell a true wild cat is by the black tip to the tail and the black markings on the legs.  These are often the first features to be lost in non pure-bred African wild cats.
