The main reason for my entry into the exciting
world of wildlife photographers was simply due to the need for high
quality photos to work from for my artwork. I bought my first SLR
(a Nikon film model) early in 2003 and was immediately hooked. I
probably now spend more of my time as a wildlife photographer than an
artist. It provides the best possible excuse for getting out into
the countryside and see what animals you can find. You also need
to understand the behaviour of the wildlife being photographed and this
means time spent actually watching animal acting naturally. My favourite
photography subjects in Britain are deer as they are such beautiful and
majestic animals. Thankfully, there are parks where you can see
deer in wild settings as they are so difficult to approach when truly
wild. I have a small number of roe and fallow deer living wild in
the woods near my home but I have only been lucky enough to see live
deer here once in many years.
In 2004, I took part in a project in Namibia which
was involved in research into the critically endangered black
rhino. This was the first time I had travelled to Africa and it
started my obsession with visiting Africa and its magnificent
wildlife. To get such close-up and relaxed views of animals is
particularly vital to any wildlife photographer especially as we don't
seem to value our own, native wildlife as much as we should.
